Fine Art Photography/Poetry Card & Poster Series
by Hope Harris & Susan Grace Lawton

Photography by Hope Harris
Her work has been described as dream-like, gentle, sensitive, uplifting and revealing. It embraces a sense of wonder and respect and extends beyond the borders of photography into fine art. From lighting, background and precise development of the final application of photo oils, each carefully tended photograph is the product of Hope’s critical eye, skill, keen sense of beauty and appreciation for life. www.hopeimages.com

Poetry by Susan Grace Lawton

Of Susan’s work, George Myers, Jr., book critic for the Columbus Dispatch writes “Her storytelling is tender, heady, luxuriant and sensuous. Her works rings true, lived and fully experienced, as undercurrents of soul satisfaction waver through her reverent grammar. To pay attention is to adore the present and Lawton attends to it like no other.”

HopeCards — A Collaboration
In November of 1992, Hope asked Susan to create poems and/or titles for her show at Paragary’s, a popular Sacramento restaurant. Developing the HopeCards was a natural next step of the successful show, for the combination of the images with the language seemed to bring the observer further into both. Susan writes of the collaboration: “With a moment of careful observation of the images along with reading the accompanying poem or title, a small ritual is made that makes one stop, look, and listen to the voice within that yearns to work in harmony and live at our fullest creative potential.”

The Wall

If severed from our magic
we move to middle age
and find only our madness
waiting there for our swollen eyes.
We’ve forgiven our mothers before us
who wove baskets in thinly veiled asylums
stashing valium, hiding bottles
instead we’ve chosen love and art.

I am the child of many countries
but first birth came in the dark night
from the faceless mother
of Aegean stones.

Brie
From my silence
the words of truth.
From my hands
food to sustain you. From my body
the willingness to know you
as you have known me.

The night you turned
into Christ
beneath my hands
sending radiant light
through your sweet head—
I sat reverently
opening & closing
my eyes
but Christ remained
in a room full of leopards
and together
we were healed.

Releasing the Past

We are lost.
Found.
Floating.
Healing. Emerging.
Holding too tight
we finally
let go.
& find our truths revealed.

I have not been restrained
for ten thousand years
and will not be for ten thousand more.
During the day, I dance.
During the night, I sleep.
Always, I am in love.
