During a counseling session my client told me she had wanted to leave her husband many times. She said she would have except for one special memory. When I asked about the special memory, she said, “We went to Disneyland for the weekend. It wasn’t so much the place, but the sense of oneness I felt. He wanted to hold my hand to be close. He was attentive to my safety and to my thoughts and feelings. We laughed like kids. We were comfortable, spontaneous, the best of friends, and much more. I enjoyed him and wanted him near me. Our hearts were open to each other. If we could do it once, we can do it again. That’s why I come here (to counseling) week after week.”
Several weeks later, her husband went away for the weekend. Before leaving, he placed little notes throughout the house wherever she might be. She found a note in the coffee can, on the milk container, in her shoe, etc. The notes were as simple as “I love you” and “You are the greatest.”
During her next session she told me how surprised and delighted she had been. When she shared her pleasure with her husband, these gestures became a turning point in their marriage, for he had touched her heart with his thoughtfulness. Together, they had created another Disneyland.
